How To Write The Perfect College Admission Essay

How To Write The Perfect College Admission Essay Some of the best college application essays are written about small moments that are meaningful to the applicant. You’re the only person with your exact combination of personal qualities, beliefs, values, and experiences, so you don’t need to lie or exaggerate to make your essay unique. Nonetheless, admissions officers recognize that different students have different strengths. They aren't looking for a poetic magnum opus from someone who wants to be a math major. But what's really important isn't so much what you write about as how you write about it. You need to use your subject to show something deeper about yourself. Most colleges are pretty diverse, with students from a wide range of backgrounds. Most selective colleges require you to submit an essay or personal statement as part of your application. Many students want to call it a day after writing a first draft, but editing is a key part of writing a truly great essay. To be clear, editing doesn't mean just making a few minor wording tweaks and cleaning up typos; it means reading your essay carefully and objectively and thinking about how you could improve it. Colleges want to know if you struggled with a serious issue that affected your high school record, so make sure to indicate any relevant circumstances on your application. In addition to standardized test scores and transcripts, a personal statement or essay is a required part of many college applications. The personal statement can be one of the most stressful parts of the application process because it's the most open ended. Many students and parents begin the college prep process by comparing the ACT and SAT tests. Both ACT and SAT scores are used for college admissions decisions and awarding merit-based scholarships. The admissions team found the essay off-putting, and the student was rejected. Had he chosen a “safer” topic, he would have received an acceptance letter. The college application essay is your chance to help admissions officers get to know you. Most colleges do not prefer one test over the other. Different students tend to do better on one test over the other. The reason that teachers don’t assign a number of pages anymore is because it’s too easy to manipulate pages. When students used to write on typewriters, it was common for teachers to assign essays in number of pages. Essay questions about diversity are designed to help admissions committees understand how you interact with people who are different from you. For some students, the essay is also a chance to explain factors affecting their high school record. Did your grades drop sophomore year because you were dealing with a family emergency? Did you miss out on extracurriculars junior year because of an extended medical absence? ” or a more specific question about how a student plans to contribute to the campus, colleges are looking for detailed and well-researched responses. Additionally, these types of essays frequently present the student as some type of savior, who is privileged enough to spend the money to fly and participate in an activity overseas. This “savior” trope could irk the admissions officer. Remember, you want to sound genuine, not sanctimonious. Both students and parents tend to think that writing about overseas volunteering or charity trips is a sure-fire way to impress admissions officers. For the same reason, we recommend avoiding profanity and graphic language in your essays. Gail Berson, the dean of admissions at Wheaton College, shares a story about an applicant with excellent grades and test scores who wrote a graphic essay about a violent video game. With the adoption of computers in the classroom, teachers switched from pages to work count because it was too easy for the computers to manipulate the font size and page size. By assigning a word count, teachers get a more accurate length of essay than they would if they assigned homework by pages. If supplemental essays are good gauges for demonstrated interest, this particular type of essay is the most important. One of the most common supplemental essays that students will come across is the infamous “Why This College? It should capture your genuine personality, explaining who you are beyond a series of grades, test scores, and after-school activities. But that’s not nearly as scary as it seems, because you get to choose what to share and how to share it. What you write in your application essay or personal statement should not contradict any other part of your applicationâ€"nor should it repeat it. This isn't the place to list your awards or discuss your grades or test scores.

Admissions

Admissions When reflecting that becoming part of this society would lead me to self-hatred, I have come to see Master as an example. The hardship he undergoes and the courage he portrays afterwards have inspired me to embrace who I am. He has always encouraged me to have my own personal outlook and opinion. After reading Lolita, my brother and I spent the following days dissecting every minute detail, trying to find some kind of understanding of Lolita. We searched together for insight, sat up late after dinner arguing about whether or not Humbert loved Dolores, and what the final meeting between Humbert and Dolores meant. My experience of Lolita is intrinsically connected to the discussions I had with my brother. Lolita inspired in me a fervent hunger for discussion of truth. By the time high school rolled around, that girl was nowhere to be found. After years and years of being told what to think and the “right” questions to ask, I had retreated into intellectual paralysis. I would uncomprehendingly coast through my classes, molding my knowledge to fit the next quiz and promptly forgetting it afterwards. School didn’t require, and at times, actively discouraged my insatiable desire to figure out the puzzles of the world, so I shoved that side of myself away and forgot that it even existed. This epic is not only a great bookâ€"it is the great book of Poland, as important and symbolic as the Vistula River that flows from the Polish mountains to the Baltic sea. Constitution, Poles are required to memorize sections of Pan Tadeusz, especially those which are thought to embody the core of what it means to be Polish. I can’t look at it without a wave of nausea and fascination crashing over me. If you flip through the book now, you can see the pages I gripped so tightly that they tore. Catch-22 by Joseph Heller, in addition to contributing to our modern language, is the most accurate depiction, I have encountered, of life in the Air Force. As absurd as the previous exchange was, it happened. Such a society is necessary if the poor are to overcome the effects of media and politicians made up of and owned by the wealthy. Catch-22 speaks to me because I don’t have the combat experience many people associate with military service. It spends most of its pages describing the time between combat, the little absurdities that make up the majority of time in the military, with very short bursts of action. I share a cultural reference frame with Catch-22 that enriches the experience. In contrast, if my copy of Don Quixote didn’t have footnotes, I would be quite lost. I think he believes that conformity undermines intellectual potentialâ€"an opinion I now strongly agree with. Moreover, he has taught me to stand my ground and be perceptive. The critical viewpoint I have grown into has trained me not to take things for granted and to be inquisitive. So, in a way, The Master and Margarita has helped me to understand my father and appreciate him as an outsider, an individualist. I have also become an individualist who tries to defy the conformism around him. A Pole reciting the opening of Pan Tadeusz is like an American reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Its author, Adam Mickiewicz, is considered something of a literary god, somewhere between Dante and Shakespeare. Self-confidence is something I have struggled very long and hard with. I used to worry that I would stand outâ€"especially in school. The views of my society are rather one dimensional towards being different. Clevenger is a motivated idealist who thinks that anything less than complete devotion to God, Country, and Duty is insane. Colonel Cathcart is a leader that cares more about his reputation for leading “the toughest” than he does about the well-being of his people. Stories of centuries ago would flit around us as her voice gave life to Orpheus, the musician, Prometheus, the maker of man, and Pan, the god of nature. Great literature forces the reader to identify with the characters. I think we’ve all had a situation in which we have identified with the protagonist of this story and had experiences with people exemplified by the other characters in this book. Yosarian, the protagonist, is a man who looks at the world around him and wonders if he is the only sane person in an insane world. Hungry Joe can only get a peaceful night’s sleep while working mission lest being driven mad by idleness. In times of strife, I would often revisit these myths, using them to process and understand the stress of my young life. To clarify, my response was not a result of any past trauma. My visceral reaction to Lolita remains a mystery to me. The words manifested in my body, and remain there today.

Crafting An Unforgettable College Essay

Crafting An Unforgettable College Essay Whether it is a Republican or a Democrat, a talking head is a talking head, and a blind decision is a blind decision, no matter what choice you make. I can’t help but think that if more people read Descartes, Plato, and maybe even the U.S. There is no mention of her being involved romantically, marrying, or even considering a family - she is unapologetically independent. Despite this, there is a calm joy in her independence, and her adventures to faraway places seem to fill her life with meaning. I have longed for this freedom all my life, and it has been my ultimate goal in pursuing colleges, careers, mentors, and even social circles. The narrator is a niece, so Miss Rumphius had to have had a sibling, but the young Alice speaks only of her aunt, and so was born my dreams of being an inspirational aunt myself. Beliefs are too often determined by trends and political bias, because in the social media age, how we are perceived matters more to us than what we actually think. I want to go to St. John’s because the whole methodology is in such a way that I can begin to love math. Every tutorial and seminar is taught with this same level of depth and understanding. At St. John’s math has life, beauty, purpose and in college I don’t want to wonder why the quadratic formula is written the way it is, I want to know. There have been so many times in high school where we’ve been assigned some math problem for homework and I would just be completely confused by it. Like other fantasy writers who go by initials, J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, Rowling summons foreign phrases, literary devices, and language jokes, and transfigures them into clever names for her characters, objects, and places. The works of Tolkien and Lewis reflect their authors’ knowledge of philology, but can veer into pretentiousness. Rowling seems to want as many readers as possible to share in the fun -- slogging through ancient Gobbledegook epics is not required. As a result of reading this book and the Meno, I have a much different perspective on how knowledge comes into being and how it is communicated, or in the case of my public education, not communicated. I find it very intriguing that with the right story and progression, anyone can be led to not only a deeper understanding of a subject but also a greater appreciation for one. Furthermore, they know this largely happens in discussions about Great Books around small tables. Having tasted this kind of discussion in high school, I will seek it out the rest of my life. This perspective is increasingly, and tragically, rare in a world obsessed with information and afraid of questions. Intellectual complacency even pervades higher education where students are more concerned with marketing themselves and acquiring credentials than pursuing truth and acquiring wisdom. Constitution, we’d have a higher level of political discourse and a better government. This may not have hit me with the same depth at age five as it does now, but looking back at Miss Rumphius, I can see the sowing of my current thought processes. The main character is the narrator’s great aunt, not her mother or grandmother. The liturgy of every class-- beginning with a single question and every individual being addressed as Mr. or Ms.-- reflects a zealous love of truth. In the classroom, ideas and individuals are honored accordingly. Astoundingly, Johnnies spend every class with individuals who probably have entirely different career goals. In their honest pursuit of truth, they recognize that preparing for a career and to be fully human should be one and the same. Surreal Numbers follows a couple on vacation on an island. They find a rock with inscriptions written in Hebrew. After some rough translation and a lot of thought, they realize the slab talks about the logic process of classifying numbers. Neither of the two are mathematicians but they take upon the task and try to glean everything they can from the inscriptions. Somehow, I found the way this scenario was presented to be engaging and allowed me to be drawn into the story. For me, that answer doesn’t help, but only leaves me more confused and mystified by math. I want all the above because ignorance is a killer, and willful ignorance is the biggest killer we face as a nation. Unhealthy diets and alcohol-fueled accidents are leading causes of death. We let talking heads and sound bites guide our politics, our philosophy, and our way of life. Miss Rumphius was patient and listened to herself, and so could find her place by the sea. My mother read me Miss Rumphius regularly before bed and from the redheaded heroine’s delicate tale, I crafted not only my goals in life, but my approach to adulthood as well.

My essay was about finding your identity afterward. I’m more of a math and numbers guy, and I probably went through three or four ideas before I found this one. Sophie grapples with tough issues and shows herself to be eager to learn. I also pursued an internship in the accounting department of The Home Depot. For the first time, I saw theoretical concepts come to life as I helped facilitate vendor payment methods and profitable product pricing. The chance to interact with higher level financial managers gave me exposure to strategic decision making and contingency planning. Before my board exams, I completed additional work on my own and solved about 70 papers in preparation. The work ethic I acquired under her guidance is something that has stuck to me through the challenging times at community college. I was thrown, unprepared, into India’s rigorous education system. I struggled with constructing angles and balancing chemical equations. I had to work especially hard to make up for the time lost at my cultural school. Even in such a badly broken system, however, there is one component that does not need to be fixed. I didn’t edit my essay a lot because I wanted it to sound authentic and like my voice. I didn’t want to go through and replace all the words with fancier words. For my essay, I wrote about being an athlete and finding your way after athletics by applying yourself in school. In eighth grade, I broke my femur, and I wrote about overcoming that. However, the more time I spent in Denton, the more I realized that there was a low ceiling for my potential to grow. I felt like a “big fish in a small pond” and my development, both intellectual and social, stalled. It's important to note that Sophie does have strong convictions, but she is open-minded enough to challenge them. The essay shows Sophie to be an engaged, thoughtful and questioning community member. She takes on challenges, sticks with her convictions, yet she does so with pleasing open-mindedness and humility. In short, she demonstrates the qualities that are a great match for a small liberal arts college. Even with a just a twoâ€"hour visit to the 40 Acres, I could already feel its infectious energy creeping up inside me, a feeling I would not soon forget. I wanted to attend a Texas public university, but not as close as San Marcos and Austin or even College Station or Houston. I am talking about the dread personal essay, which is too easy to falsify, and mostly worthless even when it hasn’t been faked. It was really interesting learning about this history that I wasn’t able to learn in America from somebody who was super-knowledgeable and cared a lot about it. I remember my sister was leaning on me, and we were driving on the highway. So, I wrote about my love for history and my love for listening to stories. She successfully presents herself as a good match for a competitive liberal arts college. Sophie presents herself as someone who is continually learning, rethinking her convictions and embracing her uncertainty. A lot of people say that you have to write down your entire life story in however many words you’re given, but you can highlight one really essential aspect of your identity. Telling a story about that is much more compelling than trying to fit everything in. I wrote about living in Milan when I was younger and how it opened my eyes to other perspectives and taught me not to be so quick to judge other people. I continue to self-study with online courses offered on Khan Academy to further exceed expectations. My classmates were behind in their education and far below my grade level, so the teachers focused most of their time on them. I suffered greatly when I switched back into mainstream schooling. Now, it was my classmates who raced through their work.

Admission & Application Essays

Admission & Application Essays When a student sits to write a short essay, he/she may have a number of ideas. But, the catch is you have to select the best idea and use it in short essay. That's when you can think back about guys who supported you during the admissions process. My daughter worked with Michaela from Moon Prep on her college applications. She had a top ACT score and has always been strong in science and math , but was really struggling with writing all the essays. She must have rewritten the personal statement over five times. She helped her with brainstorming different topics and proofread everything. The college essay often frightens students because they think it has to be about some extraordinary event and they may not have something momentous to write aboutâ€"that is OK. Actually, the best college essays I have read have been about mundane, everyday life. What made them great is that the students showed who they were through their writing. If you were to take bets on the percentage of essays read by college admissions personnel, I’d guess that it would be in the high 90’s. An essay is an important part of sharing who you are with a school. With increased competition for admission, the essay has become an important factor in consideration of your admissibility to a school. So if a school requires an essay it is VERY likely to be read. Others write about a subject that they don't care about, but that they think will impress admissions officers. Time and resources. It takes an admissions officer a lot of time to read and evaluate college application essays. Essay writing is quite a common task for students of high school and college. But essay writing got more challenging when you have given a task to write a short essay. There are different types of short essays such as college application essay, 200-word essay, 500-word essay etc. Here you can see some tips that will help you in writing a short essay. English teachers have the best intentions when helping students with college essays, but they don’t always understand that a great English essay does not always make a great college essay. It is fine to break out of the 5 paragraph mold for a college essay, and it needs to tell about the applicant. College admissions officers are very busy and only want to read essays that help them make admissions decisions. How many officers read the college essay varies. Some colleges have a team of people read each file. Others divide them up, and then only share files that require further discussion. There is not one way that all colleges work, so I always tell students to assume everyone in the admissions office could their essays so that they cannot write anything that anyone and everyone cannot read. Also I believe that students should believe that the more people who read an essay the better as these essays should really captivate and engage readers and help them see why you belong on their campus. Prompt’s team of essay experts has reviewed and provided feedback on tens of thousands of college essays. Prompt’s hundreds of Essay Specialists support thousands of students each year with feedback on their college essays, having helped students get into every top-50 university and earn millions in scholarships. If a school has a writing section in their supplement to the Common Application you can rest assured that ALL of that writing is evaluated by admissions officers. Do your best and assume that it WILL be read and that it WILL have a bearing on your admission chances. Prompt’s web application is now available to high schools who want to improve their students’ college essays and is currently used by districts such as the New York City Department of Education. The thing is, college writing differs drastically from what you've been doing in school. It is apparently more complex and, subsequently, requires more time. Rare students manage to survive freshmen year without help with essay writing by someone experienced from the sidelines. The tricky part is that not always peers and relatives have the necessary expertise. There is no way to determine a typical scenario regarding a college’s method for reviewing applications. In all cases at least one admissions officer will look at your essay. If a school uses an admissions committee the number could jump to three or more. In any case, what YOU can control is how well your essay describes who you are and gives the admissions person a chance to see things in you that will be an asset to the school.

How To Write A 500 Word Essay In An Hour

How To Write A 500 Word Essay In An Hour It is not your stories that get you into college, but how they have affected your character and your thinking. You should strive to portray yourself in the best possible light and keep your essay focused on answering the prompt. It is also important to be aware of the complexity of your topic. Pick topics for which you have enough room to elaborate. Do not cite three or four pieces of supporting evidence in an elaborate thesis if you are only allowed 500 words. Develop a thesis statement, or what you want to say about the main idea. When the writing prompt is a question, your thesis is typically the answer to the question. Describe your main idea, or what the essay is about, in one sentence. If you only have a few paragraphs to write your essay, you will likely only have room for one main point of supporting evidence. Keep your thesis short and limit your supporting points, since you always need to set aside plenty of room in your essay for introspection. Use our free and easy online tool for counting characters, words, sentences, paragraphs and pages in real time, along with keyword density and reading level. Always think about your audience when writing a scholarship essay. What organization is issuing the scholarship, and how can you tie that into your writing? You can usually use the essay writing prompt or question to form this sentence. Be ready to cut unnecessary segments out in order for your essay to meet the word count. Put your thesis in one of the first three sentences of the introduction if you are writing a 3-4 paragraph essay, and in the first sentence if you are writing a 1-2 paragraph essay. If your essay is significantly longer than the suggested word count, read through it and highlight everything that is most importantâ€"this includes important points of introspection and supporting evidence. If you choose to use this approach, remember that it might become necessary to remove information that you had initially deemed important. Here are some tips on how you might cut down your essay. The strongest way to end a short essay is to include a brief summary of your main argument and a statement that includes the implications of your thesis on your future. This will depict you as a goal-oriented and forward-thinking person without veering you too far from the main idea of your essay. What is the underlying information they want to learn from your essay? Write in a way that shows you are the best candidate for the scholarship. Get all your thoughts on paper, and you can extend or shorten the essay during the editing process. Give yourself at least two full days to write the essay. You can use the first day to write a draft and do some minor editing. Your final sentence should uphold your main idea in a clear and compelling manner. Be sure you do not present any new information in the conclusion. The concluding paragraph must summarize the essay. This is often the most difficult paragraph to write. In your conclusion, you should restate the thesis and connect it with the body of the essay in a sentence that explains how each point supports the thesis. This will allow you to fully form your thoughts and ideas and come back and integrate the main ideas into your introduction. The most important step in writing an essay or research paper is to fully comprehend the essay question. An essay can be wonderfully articulated and thought out, but will still result in a poor grade if it doesn’t adequately answer the prompt provided. If you have time to review your essay before your time is up, by all means do so! Make any revisions that you think will enhance your “rough draft” and be sure to check for any grammatical errors or misspellings. Read through your writing and make sure that every sentence has a specific and unique contribution to the essay. If two sentences convey two only slightly differing ideas, try to find a way to combine them. Use semi-colons, em dashes, or compound sentences if necessary. For example, do you have any sentences that start with, “It is” or “It seems that”? These are extraneous words that can be taken out without altering the sentence’s meaning. Then on the second day, you can look at the essay with fresh eyes to do your final edits. Cell phone restrictions in classrooms should also include specific disciplinary actions for breaking the rules. If a student is caught using the phone in class, he or she should be excused for the rest of the day.

The Music Education Curriculum in the U.S - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 4 Words: 1262 Downloads: 5 Date added: 2019/06/19 Category Education Essay Level High school Tags: Philosophy Of Education Essay Did you like this example? In the U.S., the music education curriculum has remained the same. It is easy for music educators to set themselves teaching within a box filled with the expected music curriculum, therefore make their own decisions in their classroom, instead of having students mindfully review and think critically. As a future music educator, I strongly believe it is my responsibility to enrich the development of musical knowledge through different directions and challenge my students to think critically through discussion, the quality of repertoire, adaptive learning, and construct a safe environment and community within my classroom. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "The Music Education Curriculum in the U.S" essay for you Create order While always keeping in my mind that my students come from different backgrounds, therefore may learn differently. Body While attending high school, I was involved in the choral program. I enjoyed the class because I made music. However, looking back the routine was attend class, grab my music, sit down, listen to my music teacher play my part on the piano and memorize the music that she played for us, voil?   a perfect grade for show choir, concert choir, and a cappella. She was not challenging me to expand on my knowledge or creativity as musician and I later understood that when I attended community college. Sadly, my experience in how I learned music is how many other student continues to learn music. The teachers are transmitters feeding information to their students and the students are synapses collecting that information. As if their minds were blank canvases ready to absorb the dashes of paint and preserve them. The curriculum is structured so that students are given the same experience as everyone else and therefore constructs a growth restriction in musical abilities. As a future educator , my belief to prevent the factory model within a classroom is by showing my students how what they are being taught and are learning applies to their past or current lives. I think it is up to us as music educators to help develop self-support in every music student in the classroom. Teaching students how to efficiently read music and giving them the opportunity to independently act on the music given to them helps them develop self-support. It is my duty to behave as an aid and a teammate in education instead of a reference of information. Guiding my students to unravel answers on their own instead of notifying them of what they should know. Asking questions toward my students helps them construct answers based on experiences and what they know, and helps me develop lesson plans for my classroom. Through constructivism they create a bridge connecting what they already know with what they are learning. As the music educator, it is important to choose repertoire to supply a great number of purposes not because it sounds pretty or to gloat to peers about your choir performing certain pieces. Repertoire should be chosen to help build vocal technique within the rightful vocal range of students, build aural skills based on the students musical skills to read music. It should also vary in style to expand the interest in students. If a variety of music is utilized to teach in a classroom the tendency of interest, attention, motivation and learning arises. Choosing music culturally adequate for my class is also important to keep in mind. As an educator, it is important to elaborate on the chosen pieces of music and involve my students to give their independent impute of the music. To challenge them to think critically about the meaning behind the lyrics and music as their own entity and then both together. Id also share my opinion of the pieces after they share their opinions. I think it i s very important that as an educator you share your experiences that are relevant and opinions as well. This tie back with showing your students that not only am I an aid in music education but your partner as well. It is vital that educators understand that all students learn differently and come from a variety of cultural backgrounds portrayed by different characteristics like gender, race, religion, sexual orientation and economic stance. Teaching in one specific style does not apply to all students to learn the given information. As an educator, I need to get familiarized with my students learning styles and inclinations. Observing my students interact with one another, work with one another, and answer questions can help me gather information about my students individual attributes. Then by gathering that information I can apply my observations toward planning activity work, group work, choosing music and setting instructions. I can also utilize student-center teaching philosophy to place myself in my students shoes and experience the instructions through their eyes this way I can focus on acquiring my students needs. Even more so, to be an effective music educator, I believe it is importan t to acquire four skill sets: personal skills, pedagogical skills, administrative skills and musical skills. Personal skill is required to be an impactful music teacher because it includes coping skills, time management, leadership skills, planning skills, all together help me, as a music educator, create an environment in which the students can learn in a given space most effectively. Pedagogical skills are needed to be an impactful music teacher because it helps run the class effectively and deliver information properly. Administrative skills help achieve demands given from inside and outside the classroom. Lastly, musical skills are needed to be a strong impactful educator able to deliver the material affectively, to transfer musical ideas to the students correctly. Constructing an inclusive environment arises with the educator, to make students feel safe, physically comfortable, loved, and recognized to effectively learn. Dewey constructed the idea that students should be encouraged to express their feelings, be creative and think critically because what is learned is learned through experience and not entirely through scientific inquiries from students to fully understand music. An opportunity to develop creative abilities in a classroom is if I gave music to my students and asked someone to read the piece and explain what it means to them. Music, like a piece of art, can be interpreted as one may see, feel, and think the meaning within the text and music. Another way to construct a safe and comfortable environment is by delivering enthusiasm toward my students, which gain a positive affect in learning (Kelley Gorham, 1988, p. 265) on-task behaviors (Bettencourt, Gillett, Hull, 1983, p. 266) and intrinsic motivation (Patric, Hisley, Kempler , 200, p. 266). Going back to observing interactions amongst students can give great insight on their behavioral makeup, gathering information and applying it to creating the best environment to teach. For instance if I come to notice that a student has difficulties learning by listening I could then modify my lessons by providing visual boards, utilizing flashcards, and have the student close their eyes and visualize the information to help them learn the material. Conclusion The knowledge that one human being believes in you, helps push them to believe in themselves. The support of a teacher can influence to mold an entire future. As an educator, it is my obligation to go that extra mile to help my students achieve their maximum potential not only as musicians but as human beings. Understanding my students goals and experiences will help me do more for them. Demonstrating how what they are learning can be applied to their current lives. Help them discover their strength and weaknesses and aid them to strengthen their weaknesses. My goal as a music educator is to inspire passion and spirits in my students not only to learn music but to learn in general.

Disposable diapers Essay Example For Students

Disposable diapers Essay EXECUTIVE SUMMARYWith over 1.6 million pounds of non-degradable disposable diapers finding their way into garbage dumps across America, many Americans are turning toward a more environmentally safe diaper for their babies to avoid the continued build-up of non-degradable diapers. Americans spend approximately $2.7 billion dollars per year for disposable diapers, but that number has been shrinking due to the encroachment of cloth diapers and delivery services with an estimated $400 million in sales each year. Needless to say, the disposable diaper market is a huge, billion-dollar industry. These products are especially attractive to dual-income families and single parents who dont have the time to wash cloth diapers and dont want to spend the extra money for a diaper delivery service. Competitors in the market all boast the same type of product with absorbent pads, surrounded by a snug-fitting plastic diaper that is secured using tape connectors. There is some product differentiation in packaging, non-allergenic claims, and pad size ranging from ultra-thin to thick, but other than that there is very little difference between products. Despite the popularity of disposable diapers, however, many consumers are turning away from disposable diapers because they are not biodegradable. Given this gap in the market, Bio-Diapers has been developed to provide ecology-minded consumers with an environmentally safe disposable diaper. This new line of biodegradable disposable diapers will feature all the elements that are popular among users of disposable diapers, but will include that added benefit biodegradability. The revolutionary new advancement in the disposable diaper market will attract consumers who are concerned about the environment as well as those consumers using cloth diapers and diaper services because the disposable diapers currently on the market are non-degradable. Bio-Diapers will be available for babies ranging from newborns all the way up to 30 pounds an d over. We will offer them in a variety of colorful designs and pad sizes. Our marketing objectives and strategies are highlighted in the following pages. We anticipate placing Bio-Diapers on the market by the summer of 2000. As you can see, the executive summary for Bio-Diapers is not a long, drawn-out account listing all the profit projections, strategies, tactics, etc. That is for the plan itself. It does provide a descriptive summary that grabs the reviewers attention and creates the curiosity necessary to impel the reader to the next section of the marketing plan. PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONThe purpose of this plan is to demonstrate the need for a high-quality, biodegradable disposable diaper that will fill a gap left in the marketplace by large disposable-diaper manufacturers. In a survey of 1,000 parents commissioned by Softie Baby Care Inc. and conducted by Timmons Research, over 60 percent of the respondents were extremely concerned about the environment and the effects of non-degr adable diapers; 20 percent were mildly concerned; 15 percent were concerned; and 5 percent used cloth diapers or a service. Clearly this survey points to the importance parents are placing upon the environment. The solution we are providing to these consumers is a biodegradable disposable diaper at a price point that is just 20 percent above that of regular disposable diapers. The Bio-Diaper will be produced in all standard diaper sizes and will feature various nursery designs to appeal to a more affluent, brand-name-oriented consumer. To reach these consumers, we will introduce the Bio-Diaper through specialty stores and mail order to begin with, slowly moving to large retail chains and supermarkets. It is our goal to supplant the need for regular disposable diapers. As you can see, the sample introduction starts with an explanation detailing the reason for the plan and quickly moves into supporting evidence that plainly illustrates the need described in the preceding sentence. Fro m the first paragraph, the introduction moves into the second paragraph that details the whole thrust of the plan. The readers learn that the proposed product is a biodegradable diaper that is priced very competitively with regular disposable diapers. It also goes on to indicate an entry point into the market that provides a better understanding of the marketing strategy suggested to reach the goal listed at the end of the introduction.
